The following describes the meaning of type designations (Item 1.1 on designation plate)
This will give you an indication of what mechanicals the car had when it was made.
The information was gathered mostly from the parts manuals and there may
be some that are not shown and others where the car had a different transmission etc.

The following is the information for the P and S models (B18 engine) :

P 18334 M40gearbox. All markets except USA
P 18335 M41 gearbox. All markets except USA
P 18344 M40 gearbox. US market only.
P 18345 M41 gearbox. US market only.
P 18394 M40 gearbox.  
P 18395 M41 gearbox.  

With effect from week 33 1966, the type desigation has been complemented with a sixth digit,
1 or 2, showing whether the car is LHD or RHD.

The following are for 1969 (Chassis number 28300) and up that are equiped with B20 engines.

The final digit in the type designation tells you that
1 = the car is LHD
2 = the car is. RHD
3 = the car is LHD, for USA, CANADA with the exception of California
4 = the car is LHD for California
